University of Indonesia (UI) students create smart watch gadgets that work to overcome the problem of internet addiction. The tool, called Nettox Watch, is considered to be a solution, especially for teenagers.

Quoted from ui.ac.id, Nettox Watch can detect the level of decrease in heart rate variability and record the time of the user’s internet activity directly (real time). Thus, a warning will appear if a decline in health conditions due to excessive use of the internet.

Meanwhile, the technology used in Nettox Watch is Biofeedback based therapy. The therapy uses the body’s biological signals to give excessive health warnings to internet users, especially on mobile phones.

UI students who created the tools included Irfan Budi Satria, Electrical Engineering Faculty of Engineering Students, Nabila Ayu Budianti, Biology Students Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, and Alhuda Reza Mahara, Computer Engineering Students. The three 2016 students created a smart watch under the guidance of the lecturer at the Faculty of Engineering, Eng Arief Udhiarto.

According to them, the internet has a negative impact on health, such as a decrease in heart rate variability (HRV).

“The inspiration for creating the device came from wearable devices with health sensors that are now increasingly sophisticated, such as the Xiaomi Mi Band,” said one of the creators of Nettox’s creator, Irfan Budi, as quoted by ristekdikti.go.id.

Wearable Nettox wants to take this technology even further. One of them, using data from censors to indicate that the user has decreased health due to excessive use of the internet or not.

The creator has made the prototype of Nettox Watch. In the use of smart watches this will be different for each user.

The reason, they added a personalization feature in the form of information on the user’s physical condition that will affect the readability of heart rate variability. In addition, there are also options for receiving feedback, such as visual, auditory, or kinesthetic.

The collaboration of these students is expected to help teens to control their internet usage.
According to Tempo.co.id University of Indonesia students succeeded in creating a tool that could be used as an antidote to gadget addiction, named Nettox.
Nettox stands for Internet detox or online detox. It took students three months to complete Nettox.
The research trial was conducted on a student named Tyas Sisianindita who spent almost eight hours a day playing a gadget.
“I realize that I am addicted,” Tyas said as quoted by Reuters on Wednesday, November 6, 2019.
Tyas used to use his smartphone for up to five hours at night before going to sleep.
Nettox looks like a watch, with a slightly larger size. At Nettox, sensors for measuring oxygen content in red blood cells (hemoglobin oxygen levels) and heart rate variability (HRV) are installed.
How Nettox works is to measure the user’s HRV. If HRV levels are below normal, Nettox warns gadget users.
Based on measurements by Nettox, Tyas HRV measures 44 on the normal scale according to the American Psychological Association which is 60 for ages 18 to 25 years.
Nettox warns gadget users if their HRV levels and oxygen levels in red blood drops, so they can put down their gadgets immediately.
