The presence of new innovations in the field of technology such as mixed reality is expected to be a tool that facilitates human work and eliminates boredom towards technology that has been found in the past. The Mixed reality which is meant here is a combination of virtual reality and augmented reality. By utilizing this technology, we can create a game that simulates a fantasy world into the real world. By using several tools such as googles and gloves, it is expected to provide a realistic fantasy world experience to users. Imagine if we could see a world that we had never seen before or a fantasy world that we dreamed of with all the things that make us feel excited by just imagining it. This can be realized today by utilizing a technology called Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR). By using VR or AR, we can create a fantasy world that can interact directly with us.
- VIRTUAL REALITY : VR is a kind of technology that enables users to get sensory experiences on real things in a similar way to the one that they use when they interface normally with the physical world. Such experience is only simulated; it does not mean a new experience has occurred. In other words, virtual reality is nothing but an artificial reality which is a substitute for natural reality that is felt in the actual world.
- AUGMENTED REALITY : Augmented reality (AR) aims to present information that is directly registered to the physical environment. AR goes beyond mobile computing in that it bridges the gap between the virtual world and the real world, both spatially and cognitively. With AR, the digital information appears to become part of the real world, at least in the user’s perception.
III. ABOUT GAME
In this chapter, I will explain how to use the virtual reality to playing a role-playing-game. Before that, I will explain the tools that we are used.
- Google Project Glass : The idea behind Google Project Glass, a concept device that puts your smartphone into a pair of slim glasses and projects its contents for some futuristic, voice-activated fun.
- Ultra-light Gloves : Scientists have developed an ultra-light glove weighing less than 8 grams per finger that enables users to feel and manipulate virtual objects. Their system provides extremely realistic haptic feedback and could run on a battery, allowing for unparalleled freedom of movement.
After the tools are ready, let’s talk about the game.
A. Using Google Glass
User wears the google glass and it will show the fantasy-world objects and the position of that object is according to the environment, just like Pokemon-Go and many other.
Google glass is used to substitute the usage of the smartphone so the user can move freely. Why I’m choosing Google glass instead of using another head-mounted display? Because it is light-weight and make the user movement more comfortable.
B. Using Ultra-light Gloves
Furthermore, users use special gloves as input for the actions of the user. The gloves can represent our hand in the virtual world. However, in this case, we use the gloves to represent the object that our hands hold.
The gloves also function as haptic feedback. The haptic is the scientific domain that studies the simulation of the pressure, texture, temperature, vibration, and other sensations perceived by the tactile sense.
When we do some gesture like catching the object or touching it, it will give us some simulation of the tactile sense.
The complete simulation of the tactile sense supposes that the user has the feeling that he/she can catch and manipulate the objects in the virtual reality. This involves not only creating the apprehension but also modifying the position of the objects by direct manipulation.
Another option is using Sensorial or data glove. This device has for each finger and for each palm, small vibrato-tactile simulators. Each simulator can be individually programmed to offer the sensation of touching. The simulators can generate a whole area of pulsation or sustained vibrations sensations. By combining them, a complex tactile feedback pattern can be generated. The users have the possibility of creating his profile by himself. There is also the possibility of introducing in the material of the glove some conductor plates that have the property of warming and or cooling up according to the polarity applied at the input electrodes.
C. Game Concept
After the equipment is fulfilled, let’s discuss the concept of the game that will be played. Suppose we are in the garden behind our house, then Google Glass will display a monster that is ready to attack us.
Then we make movements such as drawing a sword and when the gloves we use are within sight of Google Glass, it will be visualized as if we were holding a sword.
Small stimuli will also be given through the glove to give the sensation of holding an object. When the object is visualized to fall, the stimulus will disappear.
When virtual objects are in one coordinate as used in GPS, then these objects will activate a collision function so that between an object and another object can interact. Suppose we direct our virtual ‘sword’ to a monster, then the monster will lose a few life points until finally the monster is defeated.
D. Other Element
To make the game more uniqe, we can add hybrid sensors that combine sensors such as inertial, acoustic, and RF.
By 2020, tiny cameras with images interpreted via machine-vision algorithms will perform tracking functions. Developing machine-vision algorithms that meet VR’s demanding latency requirements has proven difficult. However, small retinal cameras (cameras with integrated retinal-like image-processing hardware) are now commercially available. These will become further miniaturized and more capable, enabling their integration into VR-hardware suites without destroying the immersive experience. Real-time computer-vision algorithms for body tracking and gesture recognition will also be developed, resulting in camera-based position tracking for VR.
Basically, this game is like any other RPG game. However, using Google Glass allows users to experience the fantasy world that joins the real world. The Ultra-light gloves are one of some option to gives some stimulus to the user.
Although, this concept still has some problem such as the processor that google glass using, GPS technology that integrated to google glass and gloves, the software or application for the augmented reality game, and many more.
For the processor, it must be powerful so when the google glass follows the head move, it not feels lag. The object must stay at their position using GPS technology. With many tasks that must be fulfilled, the processor must strong but in light-weight.
The GPS that used to determine the virtual object position must be integrated into the glass and gloves to make the object look more lively. It plays an important role to make the game more dynamic.
For the software itself, the role is to provide the object appearances based on the augmented reality. It no longer scan an image to make the augmented reality objects appear, but it uses the GPS.
Google Glass also makes users movement more freely than using a smartphone to bring up objects. Then, gloves are useful as our media in interacting with the virtual world. With gloves, we become like objects in the world. Although it still in concept, I think this concept can be realized in the next few years.
