As the name implies, LiFi technology is technology that is able to deliver internet connections through intermediaries in the form of light. In contrast to WiFi that uses meidum in the form of radio waves with a frequency range of 2.4 GHz or 5 GHZ. According to Philips Lightning Chief Innovation Officer Olivia Qiu, LiFi technology has great potential for the current digital era. This is because radio frequencies are getting denser.

In addition, light bandwidth is considered larger and is suitable for stable and simultaneous connections from various Internet of Things (IoT) devices. The technology adopted by LiFi itself is almost the same as that adopted in WiFi. Both are two-way wireless technology with high data transfer speeds.

In comparison, LiFi has data transfer speeds up to around 10 Gbps. While WiFi with WLAN-11n is able to offer data transfer speeds of 150 Mbps. The speed offered by WiFi can be up to 2 Gbps with WiGig / Giga-IR.

The term LiFi sendri was put forward by professor Harald Haas, who is none other than an academic from the University of Edinburgh. Haas himself has demonstrated LiFi since 2011 in the TEDGlobal forum in Edinburgh, Germany.

iFi itself is part of the Visible Light Communications (VLC) system for data transmission. VLC’s simple system itself has two components that meet the requirements. First, at least the device must have a photodiode that is capable of receiving light signals. Second, the light source must also be equipped with a signal processing unit.

In trials, LiFi uses a light source from LED lights. When the LED is turned on, there is a flow of photons (basic radiation waves) that are emitted. When the LED light is on, the sensor light on the other end of the device will detect it and interpret it as binary 1.

In a certain amount of LED light earlier, a message will be sent and then captured by the light detector on other devices. Furthermore, this Li-Fi technology will use several colors on the LED light. If these colors light up together this will create a huge building of information to be sent at once.

How LiFi work

LiFi works in the presence of 2 (two) light sources which are at each end of the device. The light source that can be used is LED or photo detector (Light Sensor). When the LED light is on, the sensor light on the other end of the device will detect it.

On the LED light, a message will be sent and then captured by the light detector on other devices. In its application, this LiFi technology uses several colors in the LED light. If these colors are lit together, it will create a huge building of information to be sent simultaneously. Only by using green and red lasers together, a data can be sent with a speed of 1 Gbps. By adding color, the speed increases.

Why does LiFi have data speeds many times compared to WiFi? none other than the use of LEDs. As is known, LED is a semiconductor that has different properties compared to other types of lights. LED lights are able to switch from On to Off and vice versa in a matter of nanoseconds or billions of seconds. If this nanosecond is converted in data speed then it can be equivalent to 1 Gbps

The advantages of LiFi

There are several advantages gained from using LiFi. One of them is making it easy to use the internet even for remote areas. LiFi can be useful for those who are in areas not covered by radio waves.

The use of LiFi also avoids security issues related to shared broadband networks, which also often experience overload problems. Li-Fi can also be used for the transportation industry, including controlling traffic conditions by putting this new technology into car LEDs.

LiFi can also be applied with aircraft overhead lights. Another advantage of Li-Fi is also able to reduce electromagnetic pollution generated by radio waves.

The disadvantages of LiFi

There are advantages, there must also be shortcomings. One of the most striking drawbacks is rarely acceptance. The LiFi coverage area is only 10 meters away. In contrast to WiFi which can reach 32 meters. Therefore, LiFi will lose to WiFi when it comes to general public matters, such as public WiFi.

In addition, the LiFi signal also cannot penetrate the wall. Therefore, to be able to enjoy maximum connectivity, LED lights must be placed in various corners of the house. Even the lights must remain lit even in daytime conditions.
